We know the value of education goes well beyond learning history lessons. A more educated individual is a more fulfilled individual with the tools to make better choices for their own, and for their children's lives. Indeed, a more educated world is a less violent world.
Your sponsorship will enable as many children in this rural area of Eastern Kenya to attend a top-notch school regardless of whether they could afford school fees, a uniform including a pair of shoes, a backpack, exercise books, pencils, or a pencil sharpener. At Vutakaka Primary and Junior Schools, we also serve a nutritious daily lunch and offer students free comprehensive health care at Vutakaka clinic.
These students would not otherwise have access to an education that would allow them to qualify to attend high school.
Throughout the year, you will receive individual information from the student you are sponsoring. Projects in the past have included art creations, essays and poems, and computer projects created on students' XO laptops from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC).
Vutakaka Nursery and Primary Schools
Vutakaka Nursery and Primary School in Takaungu, Kenya, opened its doors in January of 2004, offering nursery level classes to just 60 children. In 2005, due to extreme demand for quality education in the area, the school expanded to include one 1st grade class. Every year since, we have added an additional class of 30 students. Currently we are offering classes from kindergarten through 6th grade, giving us a total student population of 276 pupils in 2010!
We are thrilled with the progress our students are making and know that through our school these children have a real chance at continuing on to quality secondary and tertiary programs. Unfortunately, with more than 100 students in a single class, the same cannot be said for students attending many other nearby schools. Vutakaka School is truly exceptional as it provides textbooks to each child, offers laptops to each child in the upper grades, provides opportunities for continuing education to its teachers, and has a complete stock of manipulatives and other necessary school supplies on hand at all times. It has been proven that when girls are educated they marry later, have fewer children and their incomes rise. Their general nutrition and health improves, and the chance they will contract HIV is reduced.
We are proud that our school is not only increasing the opportunity for education, but providing the highest quality education available in our area. The EAC is confident that given the opportunity, these children, boys and girls, will be agents of change in their communities for generations to come
